On Dec. 16-18, 2016, members of the Stevens Point High Schools Curling team competed in the Wisconsin Junior Women’s Curling Championship (age 21 and under) and the first-ever Wisconsin U18 Championship (18 and under), a dual state championship hosted at the Portage Curling Club. Stevens Point curlers Krista Domaszek, Rachel Kawleski, Jaycie Korth, Lizzie Rubenzer, Suzanna Viau, and Anissa Zaske competed in the event.
SPASH juniors Rachel Kawleski and Suzanna Viau with teammates Andrea McDonald of Madison, and Elizabeth Vorpahl of Portage cruised through the championship tournament, winning five straight games against teams from Appleton, Pardeeville and Stevens Point. Lori Kawleski of Stevens Point coaches the team. With this victory Kawleski, McDonald, Viau and Vorpahl will represent Wisconsin in the United States Curling Association’s inaugural U18 National Championships on March 8-12 at the Milwaukee Curling Club in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. The Stevens Point Curling Club provides home ice for the Stevens Point High Schools Curling teams. 23 male and female curlers, who attend Pacelli, SPASH, the Charles F. Fernandez Center, and homeschool programs, compete in the Wisconsin Northern High School Curling Conference.
The Stevens Point Curling Club welcomes new curlers of all ages, and will hold Learn to Curl Events at 1:00 on Saturday, Jan. 14, and Sunday, Jan. 15. The club also offers a program for children aged 10-14 and is developing a new pilot program for ages 6-9.
